WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF AFFIRMATION?
Affirmations are positive statements or declarations that help you set intentions. They remind you of what’s possible for your life. Affirmations might seem a little “woo-woo” at first… BUT hear me out! The mind is a powerful thing.
Practicing affirmations daily can lead to changes in your thought patterns which lead to changes in your actions. You can change the way you think by changing the way you talk to yourself. When you repeat positive affirmations, your mind starts to believe them, and the results can be life-changing.
Speaking in the positive and present tense is the most effective way to use affirmations. For example, instead of saying, “I will be healthy today” say, “I am a healthy person.”
So how do you use affirmations? Here are six ways to use positive affirmations to change your life.
1. WHAT NEGATIVE THINGS ARE YOU TELLING YOURSELF? AFFIRM THE OPPOSITE.
Start by using some of the negative thoughts you may be telling yourself, then affirm the EXACT OPPOSITE. For example, I could say, “No one wants to read my blog. I have nothing exciting to say.” What I do in practice is flip this around and affirm, “I am inspiring. People want to hear what I have to say.”
Your affirmations don’t necessarily need to be something you 100% believe the moment you say them, but they can be something you are working towards. Negative thoughts aren’t helpful. If you feel like you are procrastinating recently, you can affirm, “I give myself ample time to complete my projects on time and to the best of my ability.” This positive affirmation will shift your mindset and you will start to act in alignment with the affirmation.
2. USE AFFIRMATION CARDS
If you are new to affirmations, affirmation cards are a great way to start. Affirmation cards are helpful because you don’t have to come up with the affirmations on your own. Affirmation careds give you a variety of affirmations that you may not think of by yourself. Sometimes they are so spot-on for how you’re feeling, it can be a little eerie! I love this Absolute Affirmations set or this Affirmators! set (which is inspirational and “less cheesy”).
3. THINK ABOUT THEM
Incorporating affirmations into your meditation practice is a great way to use them. Sit down, set a timer, and choose 3-5 affirmations for your practice. Repeat these affirmations (out loud or in your head) for the duration of your meditation.
You can tailor the affirmations specifically to a certain subject such as self-love, abundance, or acceptance. If you find your mind wandering away from the affirmations during your meditation, gently move your thoughts back to the affirmations and continue to repeat them.

4. WRITE THEM DOWN
Start your day by writing down three affirmations. Make it part of your morning routine to begin the day with positive affirmations. This will keep them top-of-mind throughout the day! Use a journal or note-taking app (I like to use Evernote) to keep your affirmations handy so you can look at them during the course of your day.
5. MAKE THEM VISIBLE
Write your affirmations down on sticky notes and put them up EVERYWHERE! Post them on your mirror, on your computer monitor, on your Instagram story, and on the background of your phone. Make your positive affirmations visible. Design your environment to remind you of your positive affirmations.
6. SAY THEM OUT LOUD
Saying your affirmations out loud is powerful. You can say them in front of a mirror, during a meditation, stopped at a red light, or you can do an exercise with a friend by going back and forth saying your affirmations to one another. There’s no limitation to when you can say your positive affirmations out loud. This practice of saying your affirmations out loud is extremely effective in engraining them into your brain.
CHANGE YOUR LIFE
These six ways to use positive affirmations will change your life. Affirmations are a tool you can use when you are under a stressful situation or in your everyday life. By using affirmations, it will change how you talk to yourself and will result in self-love, gratitude, and positive changes.
